Is it safe to sleep in a freshly painted room?

Is it safe to sleep in a freshly painted room?

Certain paints contain volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs. These compounds cause strong odors and toxins to be released into the air as the paint dries. This can be uncomfortable and even pose health risks for children and those suffering from respiratory conditions.

Types of Paints:

Residential paints are either water-based, oil-based, low-VOC, or non-VOC. The type of paint you use in your bedroom determines when it is safe to sleep in the room again.

Water-based Paint:

Water-based paints, such as latex, are the most frequently used for residential indoor painting. It is important to use fans, open the windows, or use a dehumidifier to ventilate the room during the painting process. It is generally safe to sleep in the room about 3 to 4 hours after the painting is completed and the room has been allowed to air out.

Oil-based Paint:

Oil-based paint, such as enamel, requires a much longer curing time. The paint may be dry to the touch within 8 hours of painting; however, there may be strong odors and toxins released for up to two weeks. The VOCs released by the paint can be strong enough to cause headaches, sinus discomfort, and nausea, especially if the room is not well-ventilated. It is a good idea to wait a minimum of 24 hours to 2 weeks before sleeping in the room, especially for young children, people with respiratory problems, and the elderly. Your painting contractor should be able to tell you when it is safe to sleep in the room based on the specifics of your home.

Low-VOC Paint:

Paints marked with the “Green Seal” logo have VOCs less than 100 per gallon. It is safe to sleep in the room the same day that it is painted. These paints are not odorless, so if you are bothered by the smell, you may want to let the room air out for a day. The smell typically dissipates in 2 to 3 days in a well-ventilated room.

Zero-VOC Paint:

These paints do not release toxic chemicals and are virtually odorless. You can feel free to sleep in the room the same day that it is painted. Examples of zero-VOC paints include Benjamin Moore’s Natura and Sherwin Williams Harmony.

The Bottom Line:

If you are particularly sensitive to smells, it is well worth the extra money to go with a zero-VOC paint to avoid the odor. Even though the paint is perfectly safe for homes with small children and people with allergies, you can always keep the window open the first night for peace of mind.
