Do you want to touch up some old or damaged furniture? Are you not sure how to go about it? If you fancy a change of style and believe your household items could do with a revamp then spray painting your furniture is a great, cost effective way to do so. You can turn rough, outdated looks into smooth, modern appearances with unique styles. Spray paint is a lot quicker than brushing in terms of application and waiting for drying. There are a number of ways to spray paint your furniture and the following is a guideline on steps to take.

1. Equipment

The initial step to any manual labour process is of course having the right tools for the task. In the case of spray painting you will generally need a mask for the fumes, sandpaper for flattening rough surfaces, primer to allow the coloured paint to shine through, and then the spray paint itself with sealer to hold it together. It is vital to have all supplies at your disposal when beginning the project as you cannot afford to abandon wet surfaces to go back to the shop and risk being damaged. You can buy your equipment at any DIY outlet or home maintenance stores.

2. Organisation

Being organised is essential to undertaking spray painting as it requires pre-planning, concentration and skill levels. You must be prepared in advance for all the steps you need to follow. Firstly, the items need to be cleaned from dust and lose edges. Take sandpaper to any noticeable bumps or shiny reflections so that surfaces are even, this allows creates an easier transition for the paint. It can be recommended to either take out the hardware, such as screws and bolts, or tighten them efficiently but do not leave them in loose positions as the paint may destroy their function.

3. Safety

Clear the area of all debris or any item you do not wish to get paint on. This can involve placing plastic sheets underneath your furniture or painting outside if there is no possibility of rain. The benefit to this is that there is good ventilation outside as well. Safety is of great importance which is why a mask was listed in the equipment above. Paint lets off toxic gases so you, and those around you, should stay covered at times you are using the spray paint.

4. Prime, Paint and Seal

Primer will allow your paint to stick and convey an even appearance. Remain at a safe distance when applying the primer and make sure to use long, even strokes. This will normally take two coats in order to have an even look. When this is completed you can begin painting. Hold the spray far enough so that there is no running caused and again use even strokes. Spray about two or three coats until the perfect complexion is achieved. After the paint has dried apply your sealant for that finishing touch.

Remember, it is always recommended to seek the assistance of professional painters when looking to have your furniture spray painted.  Contact your local trusted painting contractor to get information on the length it will take to complete each item and a quote on the cost.
