What Bedroom Paint Colours Should You Avoid?

What Bedroom Paint Colours Should You Avoid

Your bedroom is your sacred space in the house – that one spot which you can call your own. You can design it to reflect your own personal style, even paint it any colour you want.

But before you do just that – pick any bedroom paint colour you want, you should know that your choice won’t just affect the aesthetics of the space. It is also going to have an impact on the room’s ambience and consequently, your emotion and mood.

Remember, the bedroom is primarily meant for rest and relaxation. So, you would want it to have a calming or soothing feel for the space to be conducive for these activities. Unfortunately, certain colours do the opposite which is why using them in bedroom walls is not recommended.

Bright Bedroom Paint Colours

Red is a colour that you’ll usually see in restaurants because it is known to increase heart rates and elicit feelings of hunger. It also makes people eat fast which is great in the restaurant industry as it can increase the turnover rate.

This colour may be great for eateries but not for bedrooms. Staying in a space with red walls can arouse excitement and anger – emotions which can make it more difficult for you to sleep.

Aside from red, yellow – another primary colour – is also not the best choice for bedrooms. This lively hue is undoubtedly effective in stimulating the senses which is something you wouldn’t want if you simply need to unwind and rest.

Orange is another colour that isn’t advisable to use in the bedroom. Just like red, this hue makes a space look energising and vibrant. Hence, they are ideal for exercise spaces and playrooms.

What if you really want a red, yellow or orange room? Go for a muted or soft shade instead of the vibrant type. For example, use peach as a substitute for orange. You can also just incorporate furnishings or decors in red, yellow or orange as an alternative to painting all the walls with any of this hue.

Dark Bedroom Paint Colours

If there are people who love bright colours, there are also those who prefer dark tones. If you are one of those people, one colour you should avoid is dark brown.

The use of brown paint on home walls is becoming popular. In fact, several decorators recommend using this hue in the bedroom as it can create a sense of calm. But this colour, specifically dark or chocolate brown, can also make a space appear gloomy and cramped.

So, while you might be getting a good night’s sleep, you may wake up feeling unmotivated in the morning.

Another colour you should consider avoiding is black. Three years ago, black became a favourite amongst decorators and homeowners that it was dubbed as the ‘new neutral room colour’.

Just like brown, black can be great for bedrooms as evokes warmth and cosiness. However, an all-black bedroom can be overwhelming, especially when the room is small and gets minimal natural light. You might end up feeling boxed and confined instead of relaxed. You may even feel depressed when all you see are dark walls.

If you want to use brown in your room, opt for a lighter shade. Meanwhile, for black, consider having an accent wall instead of using it on all the walls. Also, if you are decorating a kid’s bedroom, it’s best to cross out black paint from your list.

Neutral Bedroom Paint Colours

For many, white paint seems like a good choice because it can make a room look and feel clean, bright and airy. But all-white walls can also make the space feel like a hospital room – sterile and cold. This association and ‘feel’ can make it difficult for you to relax and even sleep.

When it comes to neutral hues, grey is definitely one of the popular ones. In fact, it has been widely used in the past ten years. If you wish to use this colour in your bedroom, avoid the cooler types like steel grey.

Similar to white, steel grey walls can give a room a cold ambience. It can also make the space look uninviting.

Go for warm greys to achieve a soothing ambience. Meanwhile, instead of white, use other all-time favourite neutral hues like beige and tan.
