Distinguishing the Quality of Exterior Paints

Most people rely on what they are told, popular brand names and how costly a can of paint is when determining the quality of exterior paints. However, there is certain information that you can find on paint cans or specifications sheets when selecting a good quality paint.

Good quality paint begins with the properties of the components used to arrive at a certain level of resistance. Manufacturers do not set out to make an inferior paint. Not all applications require an exterior paint that covers with one coat or requires a durable and washable surface. For instance, when using a sprayer in applying paint, the thinner the liquids, the more even the outcome.

Different Lines of Paint

You may see different lines of paint when shopping for exterior paint. Paints that contain prime pigments are more expensive than those made from extender pigments. Pigments are a ground powder that gives paint its color. Prime pigments contain Titanium dioxide (TiO2), an expensive source of the white pigment which is great for covering existing paints. Extender pigments are made from less expensive materials, such as clay, silicates, calcium carbonate, talc, and zinc oxide. These pigments have less sheen, less color retention and do not have good scrubbing properties.

Binders of Paint

The binders contained in paint account for binding the properties of the pigments together. The flow of application, adhesion, integrity, and toughness are all included in the type of binders used in paint. Acrylics, polyurethanes, polyesters, resins, epoxy or oils are common ingredients of binders. You can notice the difference in the quality of binders as paint is applied and drying. A good binder will form a solid film over paint, making it durable and more evenly based.

Pick up a can of paint and look for the percentage of pigments and binders that are contained. Less than 30% binders and pigments are average for a lower quality exterior paint. More superior paints will be 30% to 45% in binders and pigments. A can of paint may also list the percentage of pigments and binders by using solids content. For example, a specifications sheet may show 20% to 45% solids content.

Most professional painters use a high solid-based exterior paint when doing a job for you. Painting-dublin.ie is a good example of where to visit to find a company that uses only premium paint in painting exterior surfaces. Now you can ask those questions that have always been lingering. If a company cannot tell you what the percentage of binders and pigments make up their paint, they are probably using exterior paint that is made up mainly of extender pigments and will have a short life. Slovak Painters and Decorators Dublin is a company that will always welcome details like what type of paint they use, what their steps in preparation are and giving information on their experienced tradesmen.
