Is it possible to spray paint your furniture in just one day?

Spray painting your furniture is actually a good way to work if you are trying save time. Applying the paint can be done very quickly, and it dries faster than traditional painting. With spray painting, there won’t be any obvious brushstrokes, just a smooth, even color. The best part is that it can done in just one day.

You will need a medium grit sandpaper, paint primer, a paint sealer, and a mask so you don’t breathe in any fumes. When you are picking out paints, read the labels to see if it will work on wood, metal, or plastic. Also, you’ll need to decide what finish you want, whether it be flat or glossy. Glossy finishes are easier to clean off.

If the furniture piece already has old or chipping paint, or if it has a smooth gloss finish, sand it down until the old paint or finish is removed. The fresh spray paint will adhere better this way. Be sure to tighten any screws and wash any dirt off with a damp cloth. If there are dents and scratches on the furniture, you may want to sand it down. If you prefer a rustic, more natural look, then you may opt not to follow this step.

When it’s dry, take your furniture into a well-ventilated area. Working outdoors is preferred by most people because you don’t need to lay down newspaper or tarps to protect your floors from paint. If you are working outdoors, make sure you work on a fairly warm day (at least 10 degrees Celsius) so that the paint sprays on evenly. If it’s too cold the paint can bubble and drip, or worse, it could freeze and crack off.

Start by spraying on a primer, sanding down any bubbles or other inconsistencies. Once the coat of primer is dry, begin spray painting in long even strokes. Don’t spray too close to the furniture or it will create rings and paint build-up. Paint build-up will drip, which will need to be sanded off later. Pay close attention to the corners, edges, and any little details, as this is where paint usually drips. Let the paint dry in-between coats. You only need to wait 10 to 20 minutes for spray-paint to dry. Don’t worry if it looks uneven, this can be covered up with one or two more coats.

Once the paint is dry and you are satisfied with it, spray on a sealer. This will keep your paint looking good longer. Not all projects need a sealer, but a dining room table will need it so that the paint lasts longer. There are many different paint sealers to choose from. You can get a glossy finish, a satin finish, or a flat finish. It all depends on your own preference and the type of furniture you’re working on.
