The Secret of Painting a Perfect Ceiling Line

Painting ceilings, particularly the edges where the ceiling meets the walls, can be a difficult task. Looking up for a prolonged period of time can be a disorientating and strenuous experience so finding ways to speed up this process without making any mistakes is always helpful.

There are certain methods and tricks to creating a perfect ceiling line that conveys a smooth finish to an interior paintjob. It is easy to make mistakes and get paint on the edges so hopefully these tips will enable you to perform effortlessly with the results of a professional.

1. Planning – Ensure that all items of the room that are susceptible to paint spills or can act as an obstacle to your work are removed from the room. This includes not only furniture but also mantel pieces, pictures, antiques and anything that is in the way.

2. Clean – The removal of dirt from the walls and ceiling are vital so that the paint doesn’t get an uneven texture. It also is vital for the successful application of tape which will be used to create straight lines with.

3. Smooth Surface – use a spackle compound to fill in any holes that have been left on the walls from previous damage or when nails were taken out. This is important in order to provide a clean finish.

4. Taping – Apply the painters tape in straight lines parallel to the edge of the wall while leaving a slight gap to avoid contact with the trim as this may cause damage. This is important for avoiding accidental paint spills to the wrong surface. Take your time as this will determine the finished look of your paint job.

5. Caulking – Use a small bit of sealant over the edge of the tape so that it is protected from paint seeping underneath. Allow this to dry for up to half an hour until you begin painting the ceiling.

6. Paint – Using a ladder and roller begin to paint the ceiling in horizontal flowing movements. When it comes to the edges use a hand brush instead and carefully brush over the tape.

7. Repeat – Allow everything to dry and do it all over again to ensure a professional job is done and no area is left unpainted.

8. Remove Tape – Pull the tape off in the same direction you applied it ensuring that you do not rush this step to avoid any damage to the paint.
