Wallpapering Tips and Tricks

Wallpapering Tips and Tricks

Wallpapers can help you achieve just about any look you want to have in your house. Currently, there are abundant wallpaper designs you can choose from. In fact, the wide design selection has increased the popularity of wallpapering amongst homeowners.

Just like other home improvement projects, hanging a wallpaper can be a challenging task. Some homeowners do not explore this option because of fears that they would not be able to properly install the wallpaper and just end up wasting money. However, just like other decorating tasks, beginners like you can do this job well if you employ the right techniques. So, if you are doing this for the first time, read on for wallpapering tips and tricks that would help you achieve professional-looking results.

Make sure you have all the tools you need before you start the installation process. Aside from the wallpapers, other essential tools you’d need are primer, cutter, smoother, papering sponge, seam roller, water tray, pasting brush and paste (if you are not using unpasted paper). You are also going to need the following – pencil, tape measure, utility knife, stepladder, worktable, sandpaper and scissors among others.

You must also select the right kind of wallcovering. It is recommended that beginners like you pick an uncomplicated design. Wallpapers with intricate details or small patterns can be tricky to match up.

When choosing, do not just solely focus on the design. You must also take into consideration if the wallpaper is durable, especially for the one you’d place in the kids’ bedroom and high traffic areas in the house. Meanwhile, wallcoverings in bathrooms and kitchens need to be washable. It is also highly recommended that you pick one that is easy to install and remove.

Ensure that you get enough rolls. You would not want to end up in a position wherein after covering most walls, you’d find out you do not have enough for the rest and the store just sold the last roll. So, make sure you accurately measure the area to be covered and carefully read the measurements on the wallpaper. In this case, it doesn’t hurt to have an extra roll.

Never hang new wallpaper over old one. Doing this can make your wall or house look tacky, even if you’ve chosen a beautiful design. Always remove the old wallpaper. Fill any holes on the wall and sand it. Then, clean it thoroughly to ensure that all of the old adhesive is gone. Let the wall dry before applying the primer. Similarly, for painted walls, remove flaky paints and patch holes or cracks. Then, smooth and clean the walls before applying the primer.

Never start without placing a drop cloth on the floor. A lot of water and paste are involved in this process. You definitely do not want them on your floor, especially the paste.

Doing this for the first time can be difficult. Hence, it is best that you do it with someone. Wallpapers aren’t cheap. To ensure that they won’t go to waste, ask a friend to help you do this project. Alternatively, you can just opt to hire professionals to install the wallpapers. This option not only allows you to achieve excellent results but also saves you precious time.

When cutting your wallpaper, always have extra centimetres. It must be at least 10 to 15 centimetres longer than your wall. This is particularly important if you have a wallpaper with repeating patterns since it’s going to be a lot easier for you to match the pattern.

Pulling the strip away from the wall and readjusting it help in removing wrinkles. For adhesive on the outside of the wallpaper, use a wet sponge to clean it. Meanwhile, don’t be too overly concerned about tiny air bubbles on the paper because they are going to disappear when the wallpaper is dry.
