How Do You Wallpaper a Ceiling

How Do You Wallpaper a Ceiling

Most people know what wallpaper is and how it’s used, but they don’t realise that wallpapering your ceiling can be a great way to make a room feel more open and add some visual interest to your space. Whether you want an elegant floral pattern or something more modern like stripes, creating a beautiful ceiling with wallpaper isn’t hard as long as you’re patient and follow the right steps. To get started making a beautiful new look for your home, here are the steps you need to take when installing ceiling wallpaper.

Prep the Ceiling

The first step in any wallpaper project is cleaning the surface. Dust and dirt can make your paper look dull, so it’s important to remove all debris before you start rolling. Use a vacuum or damp cloth to clean off dust from the ceiling, then use a paint brush or sponge to remove any dirt from corners or seams. If there are large areas of dirt on your ceiling, you might consider using a painter’s roller instead of a paintbrush—this will allow you to cover more space in less time and ensure that all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned.

Measure the Ceiling

Before you begin, it’s important that you get accurate measurements of the ceiling’s dimensions. You’ll want to make sure that your wallpaper is the right size so that it doesn’t cover any other walls or objects in the room. If your measurements are wrong, you may need to trim down some of your paper later on.

Create a Grid on the Back of the Wallpaper Panel

One of the most important steps in wallpapering a ceiling is making sure you have a grid on the back of your wallpaper. A grid on your wallpaper panel will help you get your pattern straight even when hanging it on the ceiling.

You can use these tools to create a grid:

  • Straight edge
  • Pencil or pen
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • French curve (plotting device)

Tape the First Panel to the Ceiling in One Corner

To start, tape the first panel to the ceiling in one corner. Use blue painter’s tape to ensure it stays in place. Make sure that all four sides of the panel are perfectly straight before proceeding. This will ensure an easier job of hanging subsequent panels. Use a measuring tape or level to determine if it is aligned correctly and make any adjustments, if necessary.

Using a pencil, mark the top edge so that you can cut all pieces at once using a razor blade later on.

Smooth Out Any Bubbles or Wrinkles

If you have any bubbles:

  • Use a damp sponge to smooth out the bubble(s). You can use a hot iron on low heat, then wipe away with a dry cloth if necessary. If you don’t have access to an iron, use water with dish soap as an alternative option.
  • The next step is to let it dry before applying another coat of paste and paper!

If you have wrinkles:

  • Use only the edge of your sponge when smoothing out wrinkles so that no paste gets onto your wallboard itself.

Cut the Excess Paper With a Razor Blade

  • Use a straight edge and razor blade to cut the excess paper.
  • Cut straight across the paper using a ruler as a guide. Make sure you cut all the way through. If you make a mistake, you can use your razor blade to cut it out and try again.

Repeat the entire process from taping the first panel up to cutting the excess paper until you finish the entire ceiling.

Types of Ceiling Wallpaper

For ceilings, you want to make sure that any wallpaper you choose is pre-pasted and/or washable. Pre-pasted vinyl is durable and can be applied by yourself. Washable vinyl is also durable and easy to clean, but it requires professional assistance because it’s heavier than the non-washable varieties. Non-washable vinyls are not suitable for ceilings due to the extra weight of the water they absorb in the bathroom or kitchen environment.

Wallpapering your ceiling is a great way to change the look of your bedroom, bathroom, or any room in your home. Keep in mind that it’s best to keep it simple with pre-pasted wallpaper panels and a little bit of planning ahead. You’ll be glad you did when you finish this beautiful ceiling upgrade!
