General Advice

You must measure the areas that will be painted from the walls to the roof and the floorboards if necessary. Depending on how many rooms the client is looking for you may spend a bit of time doing this. This will help you to determine the amount of paint that you are going to need in order to complete the task along with the cost and general length of work. If you need different colours or designs are required then this may require extra money and effort.

Determining amount of Paint Needed:

  • One general assumption is that one gallon of paint will equate to 400square feet of area. This may not take into account other factors such as non-smooth surfaces and different shapes with lots of curves and slants. They will require more paint than an average four walled room as although they do not add to the determined overall area they do involve extra spaces. The amount of area you will cover then per gallon will be less than previously estimated so will result in extra purchases.
  • Walls with windows, doors or fireplaces also affect your calculations of how much it will cost to paint the interior of a house. You must find out if the doors and fireplace area are going to be painted and must exclude any windows and glass doors from your estimation of paint needed. You can subtract these from the overall room size in order to calculate your relevant painting area.

Working out the length of the job:

  • This may be down to your own experience of previous projects you have undertaken of similar sizes. You will know yourself how long it takes you to cover an entire room. It may take you one hour, for example, to paint 100sq feet of a room and this will in turn allow you to estimate the length of the entire task. If there are unique features within the room that might require more attention and detail then you should add this to your total forecasted hours. Furthermore, you must include time allowed for first coats of paint to dry before you can proceed to apply the second layers.
