How to Paint the Exterior of Your House

There is a reason why so many companies specialise in house painting. Those companies understand that many homeowners don’t want to do the job themselves.

By the time you look at the number of steps involved and how long it takes to paint your house, you might decide to give us a call for help.

Choose the Right Paint Colour

Many people only paint their homes once every few years, which means that you need to live with the colour that you choose for some time. When selecting a paint colour, think about the size of your home, any decorations that you have and the flowers that bloom in your yard. You might decide on a neutral color for the walls and a trim color that matches your flowers.

Clean the Walls

When you apply paint to dirty walls, the paint will peel away from those surfaces. You need to clean the exterior of your house with a pressure washer or a similar device before painting. Start at the top of the house and slowly work your way to the bottom, which lets the dirt and debris drain away from the walls.

Repair Any Damage

Before painting, take a good hard look at your home. Now is the perfect time to repair any damaged areas that new paint can highlight. Fill in cracks and chips with an epoxy. Let the epoxy dry overnight before sanding off any excess.

Cover Openings

Unless you want to scrape paint off your windows and doors later, cover those openings before you begin. Home improvement stores sell plastic sheets that you can tape to those areas with masking tape, but you can also use old newspapers. If you want to paint the trim a different color, you’ll want to cover the trim too.

Paint the Walls

Exterior painting involves the use of both primer and paint. Primer is a special material that covers stains and leaves behind a smooth surface for your paint. Many homeowners find that using a paint sprayer is helpful. Paint the walls with a smooth and even coat of primer, let the primer dry overnight and check that the primer isn’t wet or tacky. If the primer feels smooth and dry to the touch, you can apply your first coat of paint. Depending on the shade that you want and the effectiveness of your primer, you will need anywhere from one to three or more coats of paint.

Paint the Exterior

After painting the walls, you need to paint the trim and areas around your openings. Remove the tape and plastic sheeting or newspapers. Cover the fresh and dry painted areas with more newspapers or sheeting and masking tape. With trim areas, you can use a sponge brush, a paintbrush or a roller. Apply one or more coats of paint and let dry before removing your coverings.
