Is It Easy to Paint a Room?

Painting a room is one of those few tasks that sounds easy to do until you find yourself standing on a ladder and staring at your ceiling. Painting even a single room can easily take you a few hours to complete, and if you do the job yourself, you might find that you need to wait a few days until the paint completely dries.

There are a number of factors that can determine the ease of your painting job, and you should think about each one before deciding if you would rather call a professional for help.

How Much Paint do You Need?

One of the first things you need to look at is how much paint you need. While one bucket of paint might cover a smaller room, you likely need multiple buckets of paint. If your current walls are a slightly darker color, you’ll also need to apply a coat of primer. Primer provides a fresh and smooth surface for your paint and reduces the amount of paint that you need. Don’t forget that you will also need a paint roller, brushes, trays and other equipment that you might not need after you finish painting.

Taping off the Room

Before you apply a single coat of paint or primer, you need to prepare the room. This typically involves covering the floors with drop cloths, newspapers or old sheets to protect your floors. You’ll also want to remove any furniture from the room or cover that furniture. After taking care of those issues, you need to tape off the room. Some homeowners remove baseboards and the trim around windows and doors, while others use masking tape to cover those surfaces. You need to cover any area that you don’t want painted with at least one layer of tape. Masking tape is the best choice because it peels away easily without leaving behind any residue.

Paint, Primer and Drying

After preparing the room, it’s time to apply the first coat of primer. Depending on where you live, it can take the primer several hours or even overnight to dry. When the weather is muggy or humid, the primer and paint will dry even slower. After the first coat of primer dries, examine the walls carefully and look for any signs of the original paint color coming through. If you see that color, you need to apply a second coat of primer. Once the primer dries, you can apply the paint to the walls. Even with a thick coat of primer, your walls might require multiple coats of paint.
